Defending your R&D tax claim
If your business is selected for a compliance check, the process can be complex, time-consuming and potentially costly without the right support. That’s where we come in.
Our dedicated Compliance Team ensures your claim is expertly defended – giving you peace of mind and the best chance of a successful outcome.

Why compliance support matters
The R&D tax incentive is a valuable relief that rewards businesses investing in innovation. However, HMRC’s scrutiny of claims is rising rapidly, with compliance checks increasing from 4% of claims in 2017 to around 20% of claims in 2024.
If your business is facing a HMRC compliance check the process can be daunting. Without expert support, you could experience significant delays, partial revaluations and full rejections. In some cases, penalties may be imposed if HMRC believes reasonable care was not taken in preparing the claim. With so much at stake, expert defence and proactive management of your compliance check can make all the difference.
What is a HMRC compliance check?
A compliance check is a review process where HMRC examines an R&D tax relief claim to ensure its accuracy and legitimacy. These checks can be initiated randomly or based on specific risk factors identified by HMRC.
They typically involve requests for additional information, documentation, or clarifications about the claimed expenditure and qualifying R&D activities. The aim is to prevent fraudulent or incorrect claims while maintaining the integrity of the scheme.

What's the outcome of a compliance check?
Depending on HMRC’s findings, the possible outcomes of a compliance check can include:
HMRC agrees with the original claim and approves it without changes.
A portion of the claim is disallowed, reducing the benefit received.
The entire claim is denied.
If HMRC determines that a claim was deliberately inaccurate or lacked reasonable care, penalties may be applied.
